Virginia Tech has recently bolstered its football coaching staff with significant appointments aimed at enhancing both offensive and defensive strategies.
Philip Montgomery Appointed as Offensive Coordinator
On February 17, 2025, Virginia Tech announced the hiring of Philip Montgomery as the new offensive coordinator. Montgomery brings over two decades of coaching experience, including a tenure as head coach at the University of Tulsa from 2015 to 2022. He has also served as an offensive coordinator at institutions like Auburn, Baylor, and Houston. Known for his innovative offensive schemes, Montgomery has developed high-powered offenses and mentored elite quarterbacks, such as Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Head Coach Brent Pry expressed enthusiasm about Montgomery’s ability to develop quarterbacks and build explosive offenses, anticipating a positive impact on the team’s performance.
Sam Siefkes Named Defensive Coordinator
Earlier, on January 27, 2025, Coach Pry appointed Sam Siefkes as the defensive coordinator. Siefkes brings a wealth of experience, having served as linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals and holding previous defensive coordinator roles at Wofford and Wisconsin-Platteville. His innovative approach is expected to energize both players and fans, with Coach Pry highlighting Siefkes’ reputation and knowledge in the game. In another significant move, Virginia Tech appointed former fullback Jarrett Ferguson as the new strength and conditioning coach.
