Excitement is in the air as Virginia Tech prepares to hit the turf at Lane Stadium for its annual Spring Game on Saturday at 3 p.m. But amid the usual fanfare and high hopes for the Hokies’ 2025 season, there’s one unexpected twist already stirring major buzz — and it could shake up everything.
This year’s matchup carries even more weight due to a flood of roster changes from the NFL Draft and transfer portal activity. And while spring practices offered some insight into the new-look squad, the buzz around the quarterback room has taken center stage.
Fans expecting to see Kyron Drones, the projected starter, lead the charge will be disappointed — and curious. After showing up for most of spring camp, the dual-threat QB will miss the rest of spring, including Saturday’s showcase, due to a medical procedure, according to an official school release.

Head coach Brent Pry, speaking after Tuesday’s session, confirmed that Drones is expected to be back by mid-June and fully operational. However, he kept the exact details of the injury — and whether it connects to the various issues Drones dealt with late last season — under wraps.
“He should be rocking and rolling and 100 percent by mid-June,” Pry assured.
Behind the scenes, Virginia Tech’s staff sought expert advice on how to ensure Drones is fully prepared for the 2025 season opener against South Carolina on August 31.
With backup QB Pop Watson showing promise, the Hokies have depth — but Drones remains the X-factor. His health might just be the key to unlocking a big season in Blacksburg.
