UPDATE: Chargers confirm Bold Step on Wild Draft That Could Shake Up the League

Every year, ESPN NFL analyst Bill Barnwell shakes up the mock draft world with a twist only he dares to pull off: a trade for every single pick. He only does one mock draft a year, but when it arrives, it grabs attention — and this year’s version is no exception, especially if you’re a Chargers fan.

In his latest 2025 mock draft, Barnwell had the Chargers wheeling and dealing with three bold trades, starting with a leap into the middle of the first round.

In a significant move, the Chargers traded their No. 22 pick, a third-rounder (No. 86), and a fourth-round pick (No. 125) to Atlanta in exchange for the 15th overall selection.

Why the jump? Barnwell believes this is the sweet spot where Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant could be taken — a player head coach Jim Harbaugh knows well, having recruited him to Ann Arbor. While the Chargers aren’t desperate on the edge, Grant could be a cornerstone nose tackle for the future. Veteran Teair Tart re-signed for another season, but Grant offers long-term upside.

Next up, Barnwell had the Bolts making a savvy move with the Vikings. In this deal, the Chargers slid back just two spots — from No. 22 to No. 24 — but picked up a 2026 third-round pick while giving up a 2026 fourth-rounder.

A minimal drop in 2025 for a decent bump next year. Barnwell suggests this positioning still gives the Chargers the chance to target a quality defensive player — something they’ll need with the departure of key defenders.

With veterans like Kristian Fulton, Poona Ford, and Morgan Fox likely moving on after strong performances, and the release of franchise icon Joey Bosa for cap reasons, the Chargers have holes to fill. While Donte Jackson and Da’Shawn Hand offer stopgap help, L.A. needs to start building a new defensive core around young talents like Tarheeb Still and Daiyan Henley.

Now here’s the headline-maker. Barnwell’s third hypothetical move sends No. 22 overall and guard Zion Johnson to the Ravens in exchange for No. 27, a fourth-rounder (No. 136), and star tight end Mark Andrews.

Yes, that Mark Andrews, It’s a blockbuster idea, but there’s logic behind it. New Chargers GM Joe Hortiz spent his entire NFL career in Baltimore before heading to L.A., including the year the Ravens drafted Andrews. Now, with Isaiah Likely emerging, Baltimore could be ready to part ways with their 29-year-old tight end — especially if it means upgrading a depleted offensive line.

On the flip side, pairing Justin Herbert with a proven weapon like Andrews, who flourished in Greg Roman’s offense, would give L.A.’s passing game a serious boost. Zion Johnson, still just 25, could be a valuable addition for the Ravens as they look to reinforce their offensive front.

It’s a bold proposition that could shake up both franchises — but even if it doesn’t materialize, it makes for a thrilling “what if.”

For now, all of Barnwell’s ideas remain purely speculative. But with 10 total picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, which kicks off April 24–26 in Green Bay, the Chargers have the flexibility to make some noise. Whether they follow a path like Barnwell’s or carve out their own, one thing’s for sure — it’s going to be an exciting offseason in Los Angeles.
