The St. Louis Cardinals remain one of MLB’s more intriguing franchises—boasting plenty of talent on paper, yet consistently falling short of expectations. This season has been no different, as the team has stumbled out of the gate, sparking speculation that they could become major players at the upcoming trade deadline.
With several tradeable assets on the roster, the Cardinals may soon face tough decisions. Among the names generating the most buzz is closer, a skilled star. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly recently named Him as one of the top-10 players most likely to be moved before the deadline.
Ryan Helsley, currently in a contract year, may be a prime trade candidate unless the Cardinals reach an extension agreement. Kelly noted, “Helsley is in a contract year, so barring an extension, the Cardinals might be motivated to move him. Again, though, it will depend upon where they are in the standings.”

In 2023, Helsley secured the Trevor Hoffman Award as the National League’s top reliever, notching a 2.04 ERA and leading MLB with 49 saves. His track record makes him an appealing option for contenders seeking bullpen help—and with the demand for quality relievers always high at the deadline, St. Louis could potentially acquire two top-10 prospects in exchange for him.
So far in 2025, Helsley has picked up right where he left off, posting a solid 2.57 ERA across seven appearances. If he maintains this performance and the Cardinals continue to slide in the standings, the team may opt to capitalize on his value.
Ultimately, St. Louis’ trade deadline strategy will depend on their midseason position, but Helsley’s name is one to watch. With pitching at a premium during the summer stretch, the Cardinals may be in a perfect spot to cash in.
