FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots have officially signed veteran quarterback as an unrestricted free agent from the San Francisco 49ers. While the financial terms and length of the deal remain undisclosed, the move adds much-needed depth to the Patriots’ quarterback room as they prepare for the upcoming season.
He is 30, brings eight years of NFL experience to New England, having played for multiple teams throughout his career. The well-traveled signal-caller has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2017-19, 2020-21), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019), Cleveland Browns (2022), Tennessee Titans (2022), Arizona Cardinals (2023), Minnesota Vikings (2023), and most recently, the 49ers in 2024. Over the years, he has proven to be a capable and versatile option, earning starting opportunities with Tennessee, Arizona, and San Francisco.
A Well-Traveled Career
Originally selected by the Steelers in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft out of the University of Tennessee, Dobbs has established himself as a reliable backup and occasional starter across the league. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, he possesses a solid frame and strong mobility, which has helped him remain a serviceable dual-threat quarterback when given the opportunity.
Throughout his NFL career, Dobbs has appeared in 23 regular-season games, making 15 starts. He has completed 344 of 549 pass attempts, amassing 3,281 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. While not an elite passer, he has shown flashes of playmaking ability, particularly in emergency starting situations.

Performance in 2024 and Role with the Patriots
Last season, Dobbs was with San Francisco, primarily serving as the team’s third-string quarterback. He saw action in two games, including one start, completing 32 of 47 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Despite limited opportunities, he demonstrated his ability to step in when called upon, showcasing accuracy and composure in the pocket.
The Patriots’ decision to bring in Dobbs suggests they are looking to add competition and experience to their quarterback depth chart, which remains in flux. With New England undergoing a transition at the position, Dobbs could serve as a veteran presence in the quarterback room while providing insurance should injuries or inconsistency arise.
As the team gears up for training camp, all eyes will be on how Dobbs fits into the Patriots’ system and whether he can push for meaningful playing time. Whether as a potential backup or an emergency starter, his arrival adds another intriguing element to New England’s ongoing efforts to stabilize its quarterback situation.
