Nolan Arenado was one of the most talked-about names throughout the MLB offseason, as reports swirled that the St. Louis Cardinals were actively shopping the All-Star third baseman. While Arenado has long been considered a cornerstone of the Cardinals’ infield, his massive contract and no-trade clause have made any potential move complicated. Despite those hurdles, St. Louis seemed determined to explore options, with Arenado reportedly pre-approving trades to just six teams: the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies.
So far, none of those franchises have made a significant push to acquire the veteran slugger, but as the season progresses and contenders begin to reassess their needs, that could quickly change. Teams battling injuries or looking to shore up third base could emerge as serious suitors. ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently stirred the pot again, predicting that the Cardinals may ultimately part ways with Arenado during the 2025 season in what would surely be a blockbuster deal.
“Arenado’s status is more up in the air, especially since the team already tried to trade him in the offseason,” Schoenfield wrote. “Will a team bite now? His salary—$32 million this year, then $27 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027—definitely complicates things. But he’s off to a strong start, drawing more walks than strikeouts and hitting well, which could draw attention from contenders in need of a third-base upgrade.”
Indeed, if Arenado continues his current level of play—highlighted by his plate discipline, steady bat, and veteran presence—his marketability will only increase. A club like the Angels, who have surprised many with their early-season performance, could view Arenado as the missing piece to elevate them into serious postseason contention. Likewise, both the Padres and Dodgers are dealing with nagging infield issues and could benefit from a reliable, battle-tested third baseman. The Phillies, who have had struggles with Alec Bohm at third, might also enter the discussion if their offensive inconsistency persists.
It’s also worth noting that if Arenado senses a better opportunity to contend elsewhere, he could expand his list of approved destinations. Teams like the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, or Houston Astros—franchises always looking for a competitive edge—could find themselves in the mix if Arenado is open to a relocation that increases his chances at another deep playoff run.
While nothing is imminent, Arenado’s situation remains one of the biggest storylines to monitor as the trade deadline nears. If the Cardinals continue to stumble and remain out of the playoff picture, their front office may have no choice but to seriously entertain offers. Moving a star of Arenado’s caliber would mark a massive shift for the organization, but it could also provide the kind of prospect haul that sets them up for future success. The stage is set for what could be one of the most impactful trades of the season.
