The Atlanta Braves are adding an experienced veteran to their catching depth, bringing in a former All-Star to reinforce their options behind the plate.
Multiple reports confirmed on Monday that the Braves have signed a former catcher to a minor league contract. The 34-year-old, who had not attended spring training with any team this year, will initially report to Atlanta’s Triple-A affiliate to regain game shape before potentially joining the major league roster.
With Opening Day less than two weeks away, his arrival comes at a crucial time for the Braves, who are facing uncertainty at the catcher position. Their projected starter, Sean Murphy, suffered a broken rib during spring training, an injury that could sideline him for as long as six weeks. The loss of Murphy, combined with the departure of longtime catcher Travis d’Arnaud in free agency to the Los Angeles Angels, has left the Braves in need of reliable reinforcements behind the plate.
catcher James McCann provides Atlanta with a seasoned backstop who could transition from the minors to the starting lineup soon after the season begins. The former All-Star brings valuable experience, having started 65 games for the Baltimore Orioles last year while serving as Adley Rutschman’s backup. In the 2024 season, McCann batted .234 with eight home runs, 31 RBIs, and provided steady defense behind the plate.

Meanwhile, Murphy, who was an All-Star in 2023, struggled offensively last season, hitting just .193 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs, and an OPS of .636. The Braves had expected Murphy to take on a larger role after d’Arnaud’s departure, but his early-season injury has created a pressing need for reinforcements.
McCann’s signing offers Atlanta both immediate depth and a veteran presence, as he could play a pivotal role in stabilizing the catcher position while Murphy recovers. If he performs well at Triple-A, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him called up to the major league roster sooner rather than later.
