The Seattle Mariners have a prime opportunity to secure their ace, Logan Gilbert, with a long-term contract extension.
While there have only been initial discussions, the fact that talks are ongoing is a positive sign. Given the Mariners’ reluctance to spend big in free agency—a frustrating trend—they must focus on retaining their young talent. Gilbert, who becomes a free agent after the 2027 season, should be a top priority.
During a spring training interview with Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports 710 AM, Gilbert expressed optimism about an extension.
“I love being here, and I’m not just saying that,” the All-Star pitcher said.
When asked about signing a long-term deal, he responded, “I’m definitely open to it. It has to be the right situation for sure, but I’m definitely open to it. We’ve had, I mean, loose talks. Haven’t gotten there, but it’s been optimistic I would say.”
Since his MLB debut in 2021, Gilbert has proven to be a durable, reliable, and consistent starter—exactly the kind of player the Mariners should build their rotation around. However, the question remains whether the team’s ownership will step up and secure his future in Seattle.
For years, the Mariners have ranked near the bottom in total spending, opting to develop talent internally rather than pursue expensive free agents. If that remains their strategy, then locking up key players like Gilbert is essential.
Extending him now would also be a smart financial move. Across the league, teams are signing young pitchers early to avoid higher costs later. The Mariners have already missed out on free-agent opportunities; they can’t afford to lose homegrown talent as well.
At just 27 years old, Gilbert’s best seasons are ahead of him. If the Mariners truly want to build a long-term contender, securing his future should be a no-brainer. Now, it’s up to ownership to make the right move.
