MAJOR BREAKING: In-State Four-Star Boldly Rejects Virginia Tech’s Commitment Attempt

Something big just happened in Charlottesville — and it’s sending been spoken about through rival programs. After a highly-touted recruit opened his commitment back up, several major schools were in a tight race to land the explosive playmaker. But a recent coaching hire has flipped the narrative in a big way.

When former Virginia head coach Tony Bennett stepped down in October, a skilled four-star prospect, a standout from Charlottesville, de-committed and reopened his recruitment. A fierce battle followed, with Maryland, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and even Virginia staying in the mix.

That race may now be over. Virginia announced Ryan Odom, formerly of VCU, as the program’s new head coach on Saturday, officially replacing interim coach Ron Sanchez, who was relieved of duties following the ACC Tournament. Not long after Odom’s hiring, Virginia scored a major win — and Virginia Tech took a painful blow.

Chance Mallory, the 56th-ranked player nationally in the Class of 2025 and eighth-best point guard, has re-committed to Virginia, choosing to stay home and play for Odom. The 5-foot-9 guard out of St. Anne’s-Belfield School averaged 26 points per game this season, shooting better than 50% from the field and 40% from three.

With his vision, scoring ability, and control of the floor, he’s the kind of player who can make an immediate impact at the college level.

In an interview with On3, Mallory said that despite all the offers and interest, “Charlottesville is home — and that’s where I want to be.”

Virginia Tech, meanwhile, now faces a growing gap at guard. Brandon Rechsteiner just entered the transfer portal, leaving Ben Hammond and Sin’Cere Jones as the only confirmed options for next season. With the portal opening on Monday, Mike Young is expected to make a hard push to bring in help — and hope for better luck than last year.
