MAJOR BREAKING: Coach Brent Pry Confirms ‘Worrying’ Injury Update On Key Star

Virginia Tech fans are gearing up for the highly anticipated annual Spring Game at Lane Stadium this Saturday at 3 p.m. With a flurry of offseason changes, transfer portal activity, and NFL-bound talent, this year’s scrimmage was already expected to have a different flavor — and now it’s even more intriguing.

One notable absence will be a crucial member of the team, the dynamic playmaker who missed much of the closing stretch last season. Despite participating in the majority of spring practices, Drones has now been ruled out for the remainder of the spring period and Saturday’s game following a recent medical procedure. The university announced the news on game day, sending shockwaves through Hokies Nation.

Head coach Brent Pry addressed the situation after Tuesday’s practice, providing a cautiously optimistic update.

“He should be rocking and rolling by mid-June,” Pry said, adding that early June is a possible target for Drones’ return to full football activity. While Pry remained tight-lipped on the specific issue, he made it clear that the team consulted medical experts to ensure their starting QB could be fully healthy by the season opener on August 31 against South Carolina in Atlanta.

Was the procedure related to previous injuries — an MCL issue, turf toe, or a stress fracture? Pry wouldn’t say. But the coaching staff clearly felt it was important enough to get Drones another opinion and secure his long-term readiness.

“We asked the experts what it would take to get him to 100% for the full season,” Pry noted.

In the meantime, backup Pop Watson has been making waves in practice and appears more than capable of managing the offense in Drones’ absence. Still, there’s no question that a healthy Kyron Drones is central to any hopes Virginia Tech has of contending in 2025.
