Former NFL general manager Tom Telesco recently appeared on the “Check the Mic” podcast with hosts Steve Palazzolo and Sam Monson, where he provided an in-depth look into the Los Angeles Chargers’ decision to draft quarterback Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Telesco emphasized the importance of a seamless transition from longtime quarterback Philip Rivers, stating, “I wanted to make sure we had a plan at quarterback that was seamless… When there’s a big gap, usually that GM isn’t going to be there anymore.”
The Chargers had identified Herbert as their top quarterback prospect as early as the 2019 draft process. However, Herbert chose to return to the University of Oregon for his senior year, delaying his entry into the NFL. Telesco noted that the team’s evaluation of Herbert remained consistent, citing his mobility and fit within head coach Anthony Lynn’s offensive scheme as key factors.
When comparing Herbert to other quarterbacks in the 2020 draft class, Telesco acknowledged that Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa was also highly regarded. However, concerns about Tagovailoa’s hip injury played a significant role in the Chargers’ decision-making process. “People forget that Tua had a really serious hip injury at Alabama,” Telesco explained. “It concerned us at the time… So that was a big factor for us.”
Despite these concerns, Telesco confirmed that if Herbert had been selected before the Chargers’ pick, the team would have been comfortable drafting Tagovailoa. “We felt great about both guys… All three [top quarterbacks] are going to be really good players in this league.”
Herbert’s subsequent performance validated the Chargers’ decision. He set multiple rookie records, including most passing touchdowns and completions, and was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2021, he became the first quarterback in Chargers history to throw for over 5,000 yards and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. Ahead of the 2023 season, Herbert signed a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension, solidifying his role as the franchise quarterback.
Telesco’s insights on the podcast provided a rare glimpse into the strategic considerations and evaluations that NFL teams undertake during the draft process, highlighting the complexities involved in selecting a franchise quarterback.
