Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of Megan Duffy’s arrival in Blacksburg, and she celebrated in style—by landing her first major transfer portal addition of the offseason.
Despite inheriting a thin roster, Duffy’s Year One was nothing short of impressive. The Hokies finished 19-13 and were heartbreakingly close to securing an NCAA Tournament spot—just one team away from making the 68-team field. They instead earned a No. 1 seed in the WBIT, bowing out in the second round after a hard-fought game against Texas Tech.
Since then, three Hokies have entered the transfer portal, with Lani White being the most significant departure. But Duffy has shown she’s not just rebuilding—she’s reloading. On Thursday, she secured a key commitment from Purdue guard Sophie Swanson, a move that instantly boosts Virginia Tech’s backcourt depth and versatility.
Swanson, a 5-foot-10 spark plug from Illinois, averaged 8.9 points per game in 28 outings for the Boilermakers this past season. While she primarily came off the bench, she made the most of her minutes and showed clear growth from her freshman year. A former Illinois Miss Basketball winner in high school, Swanson’s senior year was cut short by a knee injury, but she’s bounced back strong—and now, she’s ready for a fresh start in the ACC.

Her arrival gives Duffy a potent new weapon alongside returning guards Carleigh Wenzel, Mackenzie Nelson, Samyha Suffren, and incoming standout Katie Sears. Swanson’s scoring ability, size, and feel for the game will allow Duffy to experiment with dynamic lineups and put pressure on opposing defenses.
This isn’t just a solid addition—it’s a statement. Swanson brings firepower, potential, and a winning pedigree to a Hokies team hungry for more. If this is the first move of Duffy’s offseason, Virginia Tech fans should be watching closely—because something special might be brewing in Blacksburg.
