The top aim during spring training is to keep important Orioles players healthy. Unfortunately for Orioles fans, the recent game brought some troubling news, as the shortstop left after only one inning due to “lower right side discomfort.”
His injury wasn’t the only infield issue of the day. Before the game, the team stated that Jordan Westburg, who had been out of the lineup for a few days, had a back injury and was being treated. He is expected to return in a few days, although that is yet to be determined.
After the game, manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Henderson’s discomfort stemmed from landing on his side after the catch. Hyde also stated that there are no plans for an MRI and that Henderson will be re-evaluated tomorrow.
The intensity of “lower right side discomfort” will dictate the amount of concern. If it’s an oblique strain, Henderson may be unable to play on Opening Day. If it’s only a slight pinch or cramp, the team’s cautious attitude during spring training could indicate that it’s nothing significant.
Regardless, it’s disconcerting to think about losing a player of Henderson’s ability, as there is no true backup plan for an MVP-level shortstop going down. While there is no need to panic, it is difficult not to hold your breath—at least symbolically.
