JUST IN: Wolverines Confirm Groundbreaking News on QB Addition

While Michigan football has a clear starting quarterback lined up for the upcoming season, the program appears to still be seeking added depth and experience at the position.

Earlier in the offseason, there were rumors that Michigan might pursue a quarterback through the transfer portal, largely due to concerns surrounding the health of Mikey Keene. Despite that speculation, the Wolverines opted not to bring anyone in during the spring. Fortunately for the team, Keene is reportedly making progress in his recovery. According to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, Keene is now throwing again and is expected to be fully healthy in time for the 2025 season.

Despite that promising update, Michigan has renewed its search for a transfer quarterback. Talk of a potential addition grew louder on Friday when, a transfer portal quarterback, received two predictions to commit to Michigan—one from EJ Holland and the other from Pete Nakos, both of On3.com.

He is no stranger to college football. He has previously played at Miami, Missouri, and most recently at East Carolina. During his stint with the Pirates last season, He completed 60.2% of his passes, throwing for eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

What the move could mean for Michigan’s quarterback room

The idea that Michigan is concerned about five-star freshman Bryce Underwood, the expected starter, is unfounded—despite what rival fans may suggest. This potential move has more to do with a lack of experienced depth behind Underwood than any doubts about his ability.

Underwood and second-year quarterback Jadyn Davis were the only signal-callers available for spring practices. Underwood is firmly in line to start, while Davis, once a highly touted recruit, hasn’t developed as expected and has not inspired much confidence within the coaching staff.

Adding Garcia would offer the Wolverines a seasoned backup option. Having started games for both Miami and East Carolina, Garcia brings valuable in-game experience—something currently lacking in Michigan’s quarterback room. Given that Keene is set to depart after this season and Davis might explore a transfer due to limited opportunities or performance concerns, Garcia could become a key depth piece for this season and potentially the next, depending on eligibility.

while the addition of Garcia (if it happens) shouldn’t be seen as a move against Underwood, it is a calculated effort by the Michigan staff to ensure they have veteran insurance at quarterback. The bigger question may be about Keene’s durability moving forward, as Garcia could find himself moving into the QB2 spot if Keene’s recovery hits any setbacks.
