JUST IN: Virginia Tech’s Mike Young Provides Crucial Update on Mylyjael Poteat Post-Miami Victory

Virginia Tech secured a crucial 81-68 victory over Miami on Saturday night, but the win came with some concern as senior center Mylyjael Poteat appeared to suffer a knee injury late in the first half. The injury occurred when a Hurricanes player fell into Poteat’s leg near the defensive basket, causing him to remain on the floor for several moments before making his way to the locker room with caution.

The ACC Network broadcast initially reported that Poteat was doubtful to return, and he was ultimately sidelined for the rest of the game. However, despite his absence, the Hokies found contributions from Jaydon Young and Ben Burnham, who helped spark a dominant performance off the bench, combining for 53 points to secure Virginia Tech’s season sweep over Miami.

Mike Young Provides Encouraging News on Poteat’s Status

Following the Hokies’ seventh ACC victory and fifth road win of the season, head coach Mike Young offered an optimistic update regarding Poteat’s injury. While the severity of the issue had been uncertain, Young reassured fans that the injury was not as serious as initially feared.

“I don’t think it’s going to be anything substantial,” Young stated, suggesting that Poteat’s recovery timeline may not be extensive.

This update comes as a relief for Virginia Tech, as losing Poteat for an extended period would have created significant challenges in the frontcourt. He had already contributed six points in the first half before exiting, playing an important role alongside Lynn Kidd.

While it remains uncertain if Poteat will be available for Tuesday night’s home matchup against Louisville, the Hokies begin a critical three-game homestand featuring Syracuse and North Carolina. With the ACC Tournament approaching and a regular-season finale against Clemson in two weeks, Virginia Tech will be hoping for Poteat’s quick return as they continue to push for a strong conference finish.
