This week has brought significant changes to Virginia Tech’s basketball program. While some of the shifts have involved players entering the transfer portal, Hokies has announced staff changes that will impact the team moving forward. Some staff will not return for the 2025-26 season.
We appreciate their dedication and hard work during their time in Blacksburg, Young said. “One has been an integral part of our program for nearly a decade, while the other made an immediate impact in his time with us. Both have promising futures ahead, and we wish them the best.

“As we continue to evaluate every aspect of our program, these changes reflect our commitment to positioning Virginia Tech men’s basketball for long-term success. This transition presents an opportunity for us to evolve and adapt to the current landscape of college athletics.”
In addition to coaching changes, Virginia Tech has seen a wave of player departures, with four athletes entering the transfer portal this week. Guards and a center have all announced their decisions to leave the program.
One guard spent two seasons at Virginia Tech, appearing in 32 games this year with 15 starts. He averaged 7.0 points per game, shooting 37% from the field and 30% from three, while leading the team in assists at 2.8 per game. A former four-star recruit, he initially chose Virginia Tech over offers from LSU, Xavier, and Tennessee.
Another guard had standout performances this season, including a 26-point game in a win over Syracuse and a 27-point outing against Miami. However, those were the only games in which he scored more than 14 points.
A forward opted to enter the portal after one season with the program following a transfer from Cal. He played in 18 games this year, averaging 15.2 minutes and 4.1 points per game. During his previous season with the Golden Bears, he appeared in 32 games, averaging 3.5 points in 14 minutes per game.
A center also decided to move on after playing in 31 games this season, averaging 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds in 11 minutes per game.
More movement through the transfer portal is expected, as Virginia Tech navigates a critical offseason.
Following the team’s ACC Tournament loss, Young emphasized the need for an immediate talent upgrade.”A lot was missing, just call it what it is,” Young said. “They are great kids and a pleasure to work with, but we have to get more talented, and we are going to—quick.”
While this may not have been one of the more talented teams in the ACC, Young deserves credit for leading the team to a 10th-place finish—higher than its preseason projection. However, with roster and staff changes underway, the program faces a pivotal offseason in its effort to remain competitive.
