JUST IN: Virginia Tech Hokies Deliver Tough Update on In-State Four-Star Standout

When former Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett resigned last October, the  four-star guard  from Charlottesville withdrew his commitment and reopened his recruitment. He considered Maryland, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and Virginia as potential destinations.

On Saturday, Virginia officially named former VCU coach Ryan Odom as its new head coach, replacing interim coach Ron Sanchez, who was dismissed after the ACC Tournament. Odom quickly made an impact at his new post, delivering a setback to Virginia Tech and head coach Mike Young.

Mallory Recommits to Virginia

Following Odom’s appointment, the star reaffirmed his commitment to Virginia, opting to stay in his hometown for his college career. Ranked No. 56 overall in the Class of 2025, he is considered the eighth-best point guard and the third-best player in the Commonwealth, according to On3.

Standing 5-foot-9, Chance Malloryhails from St. Anne’s-Belfield School and averaged 26 points per game this season, shooting over 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. A dynamic playmaker, he was poised to make an immediate impact at Virginia Tech had he chosen the Hokies.

Mallory to announce decision Saturday

Speaking to On3, Mallory cited his deep connection to Charlottesville and his desire to play for his hometown team as key factors in his decision.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech faces a shortage at the guard position after Brandon Rechsteiner entered the transfer portal. With the portal opening Monday, the Hokies retain freshman Ben Hammond and Class of 2025 commit Sin’Cere Jones, but Young will likely need to recruit another point guard through the portal—hoping for better success than last year.
