The Minnesota Vikings have made it clear who is their official guy at this point
After months of speculation and swirling trade rumors, the Vikings have shut down all doubt by reaffirming their full commitment to their 2024 first-round pick as their franchise quarterback moving forward.
The signal-caller, who missed what would’ve been his rookie campaign due to a preseason knee injury, is now poised to lead the team in 2025. Minnesota has built the offense around his skillset — and despite some analysts pushing for a potential reunion with veteran Kirk Cousins, the front office has doubled down on their plan.
Behind J.J. McCarthy is a group of young, unproven quarterbacks. Brett Rypien, 28, brings minimal experience, while newly acquired Sam Howell, 24, looks set to battle for the QB2 spot. Former Gopher Max Brosmer has also joined the room as a developmental arm.
Minnesota had its shot at more seasoned veterans. Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones were on the team’s radar, but the front office instead made it crystal clear: this is McCarthy’s team now.
Rumors continue to swirl around a possible Kirk Cousins return from Atlanta. Insiders like ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Seth Walder both floated scenarios where Cousins could land back in Minnesota as a high-end insurance policy. But while Cousins still has gas in the tank — and could instantly elevate the quarterback room — his presence might cloud the development of McCarthy.
After all, how can a rookie thrive if he’s constantly looking over his shoulder?
Instead of bringing in more quarterback controversy, the Vikings chose to support McCarthy in other ways — beefing up the offensive line with center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries, drafting standout lineman Donovan Jackson, and adding power back Jordan Mason to pair with Aaron Jones.
Make no mistake — J.J. McCarthy is the face of the franchise, and Minnesota is finally ready to hand him the keys.
If he stays healthy, the Vikings may have just secured their next franchise QB for the next decade.
