The Philadelphia Phillies are built to contend for a World Series title, but their veteran core won’t be around forever. That could prompt the front office to make a bold move this summer to boost their championship hopes. One player to keep an eye on as a possible trade piece is third baseman Alec Bohm.
Bohm, 28, has spent his entire six-year MLB career with the Phillies and has been a key figure in their current roster makeup. But with a sluggish start to the 2025 season, his future in Philadelphia could be in question—especially since he’s playing on a one-year deal. So far, he’s hitting just .200 with a dismal .451 OPS and a 30 OPS+, raising concerns about his offensive contributions.
Although he isn’t a standout defender at third base, Bohm still offers some power—he hit 20 home runs in 2023—and his affordable contract could make him an attractive option for other contending teams. He earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, but that might prove to be more of a high point than a regular expectation. Bohm remains a decent bat and dependable player in his prime, but Philadelphia may be willing to move on.

Estrada brings electric stuff out of the bullpen, including a high-velocity four-seam fastball and a signature pitch dubbed the “chitter”—a unique off-speed pitch that blends characteristics of a split-change and a Vulcan grip. It drops sharply and is tough for hitters to track.
San Diego has a deep, talented bullpen, meaning they could afford to part with Estrada. Bohm, in turn, would give their infield some valuable depth and allow stars like Manny Machado and Luis Arráez to rest more frequently at the corner infield spots.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, could shift Edmundo Sosa into the third base role. Sosa, who is a natural shortstop and a strong defender, has started the 2025 season on fire—batting .563 with a 1.401 OPS and a jaw-dropping 296 OPS+ through his first 16 at-bats.
This move would also help address the Phillies’ bullpen, which has struggled, especially with Jordan Romano underperforming. Strengthening the pitching staff could be a smart long-term play, especially as the team gears up for a deep postseason run.
