The Mariners have designated the right-hander for assignment, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for Luis F. Castillo. Castillo is set to start today’s game, following a quirky coincidence—fellow pitcher Luis Castillo started the previous game for Seattle. The team had already made room on the active roster by optioning lefty Jhonathan Díaz yesterday.
The 26, was a recent pickup from the Blue Jays via waivers in January. He pitched 3 1/3 innings during spring training, giving up five earned runs, and was then sent to Triple-A Tacoma, where he began the season with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
His pitching career is still developing. Originally drafted as a catcher, Danner switched to pitching after struggling at the plate. He’s shown promise in limited action but has dealt with injuries, never surpassing 40 innings in a season.

Hagen Danner’s major league experience consists of just one-third of an inning in 2023. In the minors since 2021, he’s logged 116 2/3 innings with a 2.93 ERA, a 28.3% strikeout rate, and an 8.7% walk rate.
The Mariners now have a week to decide his fate. The waiver process lasts 48 hours, so trade interest would need to emerge soon. Since Danner still has an option remaining, a team could claim him and send him to the minors. If he clears waivers, Seattle could retain him as non-roster pitching depth.
