Who says you can’t return home again? Virginia Tech coach Mike Young was dealt a heavy blow when his top assistant coach left following the 2020-21 season. While Young replaced him with Mike Jones, the impact was not the same. his assistant left after two seasons to assume a similar position on Maryland’s staff.

In 2024, new West Virginia coach Darian DeVries hired him as his top assistant, but after only one year, DeVries left to become the head coach of Indiana, leaving him free to pursue other opportunities. On Tuesday, Virginia Tech announced the hiring of Frazier as associate head coach. He left Blacksburg in 2021 to work as an assistant at his alma mater, Illinois, where he spent the next three seasons.

Chester Frazier, who has been with the Hokies since 2016, replaces Christian Webster, who was let go by Young after the season.

Frazier chose to return to Blacksburg with his family to work for a coach he admires. “We are thrilled to welcome Chester, his wife, Sarah, and children, Chandler, Cameron, and Courtney, back to Blacksburg,” Young said.

Here’s what Frazier said regarding his return to Virginia Tech.

I’m looking forward to once again working with Coach Young and the entire staff to help return this program back to where it belongs.”

Frazier is a tenacious recruiter who excels in defensive coaching. The former Illinois guard might help Tech bring in experienced and talented players through the transfer portal.

Make no mistake: this is a major hire for Young, who is entering a pivotal year. The Hokies will reportedly receive greater financial support, allowing them to recruit superior talent through the portal. Frazier is a great first move for Young.
