JUST IN: Gophers Land Commitment from Highly Sought-After Offensive Weapon Over Rivals

In a surprising turn for local recruiting, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have secured a commitment from Janesville (Wis.) Parker offensive tackle Gavin Meier for the 2026 class. Meier announced his decision on Wednesday night, a move that defied most predictions which had favored in-state rival Wisconsin’s Badgers throughout the process.

Despite the prevailing expectations, Minnesota stood out as Meier’s first Power Four or Big Ten program to extend an offer. After spending time camping on campus and joining an unofficial gameday visit in the Twin Cities, he discovered a genuine sense of belonging with the Gophers. While Meier also weighed offers from programs like Auburn and Indiana, the connection he forged in Minnesota ultimately proved irresistible. Rated as a three-star prospect with an 88 rating, he is currently ranked as the No. 40 offensive tackle nationally and the top junior in Wisconsin by 247Sports.

Now the Gophers’ 2026 recruiting class boasts six commits, with Meier joining fellow in-state prospect Andrew Trout to potentially anchor the offensive line as the bookend tackles. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound Meier earned First Team All-Conference honors as a junior and has maintained a strong academic record with a 3.7 GPA, highlighting his well-rounded capabilities both on and off the field.

When asked why he opted for Minnesota over his home state’s Badgers, Meier explained his decision to 247Sports. “Minnesota has felt like home since day one,” he said. “The people, the culture, and the coaches make this place a program like no other. Let’s Row the Boat, Gopher Nation!” His heartfelt comments underscore a belief that the environment at Minnesota is uniquely positioned to help him reach his full potential and prepare him for a successful future at the next level.

With this commitment, the Gophers not only strengthen their offensive line but also send a clear message in the highly competitive recruiting landscape by snatching one of Wisconsin’s top prospects away from their traditional rival.
