Donovan Mitchell has been sidelined for the past week due to an ankle injury he sustained during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ game against the San Antonio Spurs on April 6. The injury forced him to miss the final stretch of the regular season, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming playoffs.
However, Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson offered a promising update on Mitchell’s status ahead of the team’s season finale against the Indiana Pacers. His comments suggest that the star guard is on track for a return in time for the postseason.
“I think he’ll be full on with practice,” Atkinson said. “We’re going to have to scrimmage at some point—probably an intersquad with referees—and he’ll participate in that. The biggest thing is making sure we ramp up his ankle rehab and get his conditioning where it needs to be.”

That’s welcome news for Cavaliers fans, as Mitchell’s presence will be critical for the team’s playoff aspirations. The 27-year-old guard has been the engine behind Cleveland’s offense this season, consistently leading the team in scoring while providing veteran leadership on and off the court.
Through 71 games in the regular season, Mitchell averaged 24 points, 5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per contest. He shot an efficient 44.3% from the field and hit 36.8% of his shots from three-point range. His dynamic scoring ability, along with his experience and composure in high-pressure situations, makes him a key piece in the Cavaliers’ pursuit of a deep playoff run.
With the 2025 NBA Playoffs around the corner, Cleveland will be hoping Mitchell can return to form quickly and help solidify the Cavs’ place as legitimate title contenders. His recovery progress in the coming days will be closely watched as the team prepares for what they hope will be a long postseason journey.
