One of the Bruins’ top defensemen and a vital component of their blue-collar identity, will miss the upcoming five-game road trip to Las Vegas starting Thursday night. The star, who has not played since February 8, remains sidelined as his return timeline continues to be uncertain.
The injury setback stems from a significant AC joint injury and an accompanying shoulder infection that he sustained during Team USA’s opening game of the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off against Finland—a game that landed him in the hospital for three nights. The timing was particularly unfortunate, as he was released from the hospital just hours before Team USA’s heartbreaking championship loss to Team Canada. His condition has left the Bruins with a noticeable void in the defensive lineup.
Interim coach Joe Sacco confirmed after Tuesday’s practice that Charlie McAvoy will not be traveling with the team for the Las Vegas trip. “We need to manage his recovery carefully, and right now, it just isn’t safe for him to be out on the road,” Sacco said. The decision to sit him out underscores the severity of his condition, as the coaching staff prioritizes his long-term health over a rushed return to action.
McAvoy’s absence comes at a critical time for the Bruins. As one of their most reliable blueliners, his defensive prowess—characterized by his strong positional play, shot-blocking ability, and overall leadership on the ice—has been instrumental in Boston’s success this season. With the team now facing a lengthy road stretch, the loss of McAvoy further complicates their quest for consistency as they push toward the playoffs.

In the meantime, the Bruins will rely on other key defensemen to fill the gap, but the uncertainty surrounding McAvoy’s return remains a major concern for both the coaching staff and fans alike. As the Bruins navigate this challenging period, the hope is that proper medical care and sufficient rest will allow McAvoy to eventually make a strong comeback, reinforcing the team’s defensive stability.
Stay tuned for further updates as the Bruins continue to monitor McAvoy’s progress and work to minimize the impact of his absence on their season.
