A former North Carolina star now with the Seattle Seahawks was recently made available, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson. Seattle is open to moving him just one year after acquiring him from the Washington Commanders.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers remain focused on veteran Aaron Rodgers and top quarterback prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, a familiar name from their 2022 pre-draft evaluations—is now available via trade.
The Seahawks have received some trade interest, and given Pittsburgh’s past scouting of the QB, it’s reasonable to think they might be among the interested teams. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan even sees the Steelers as his best fit, given their urgent need at quarterback. The Vikings and Buccaneers were also named as possible landing spots.
Sullivan writes that the Steelers’ quarterback situation is among the most unsettled in the league. With only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson under contract, Pittsburgh is in dire need. While he may not be a perfect solution, he arguably offers more upside than either.

Though Howell likely isn’t a long-term answer, the Steelers do need depth—especially with Rudolph as the only QB signed beyond 2025. The Steelers were heavily involved in Howell’s pre-draft process in 2022, with meetings and a strong presence at his Pro Day.
Despite turnover in the front office—Kevin Colbert’s retirement, Matt Canada’s departure, and Brandon Hunt’s exit to the Eagles—head coach Mike Tomlin remains. And Howell had previous ties to current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from his 2022 Atlanta visit.
As the Steelers weigh their options between Rodgers, the draft, or a trade, Howell stands out as a potentially low-risk addition from a team Pittsburgh has recent trade history with.
