ESPN: Rams Tied to Blockbuster Deal for $72M All-Pro Cornerback

The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back a familiar and highly accomplished face to help strengthen a defense that struggled in 2024, allowing the seventh-most yards in the NFL. The cornerback is currently on the trade block following confirmation from Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier earlier this offseason that the team is actively seeking potential trade partners for the veteran defender.

According to ESPN analyst and NFL insider Matt Bowen, he has been linked to a potential reunion with the Rams — a move that could prove mutually beneficial for both sides. Despite now being 30 years old and no longer commanding the sky-high trade price he once did, he still carries the experience, talent, and familiarity with the Rams’ system and city that could make him a valuable addition.

He was first acquired by Los Angeles midway through the 2019 season when the Rams traded two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for the All-Pro corner. During his four seasons with the franchise, he earned two First-Team All-Pro honors and three Pro Bowl selections and played a pivotal role in helping the Rams capture their first Super Bowl title since 1999.

Dolphins looking to trade Jalen Ramsey in offseason makeover

While his prime years may be behind him, Jalen Ramsey remains a highly effective defender and could instantly become the Rams’ top cornerback. Bowen emphasized that beyond the emotional and organizational ties, Ramsey still offers a high-level schematic fit for Los Angeles. “Ramsey can still pattern match vertically downfield, and he still has high-end backfield vision in zone coverage,” Bowen explained. “He would also give Los Angeles more flexibility in sub-packages because he can create disruptive plays as a nickel corner.”

Currently, the Rams’ starting cornerbacks are Ahkello Witherspoon, 30, and Darious Williams, 32 — both of whom are coming off solid 2024 seasons. However, considering the long-term picture and the team’s depth, adding Ramsey could significantly bolster the secondary both now and in the near future. Younger options like Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes provide depth, but both are scheduled to hit free agency after the 2025 season, leaving question marks for the years ahead.

Ramsey, meanwhile, is coming off a strong campaign with the Dolphins. In 2024, he started every game, recorded two interceptions, defended 11 passes, and registered six tackles for loss — proving that he still has plenty left in the tank.

With a career that includes three All-Pro First-Team selections, seven Pro Bowl nods, and a Super Bowl ring, Ramsey’s return could elevate the Rams’ defense both in terms of performance and leadership. Given the current state of the roster and the need for a reliable presence in the secondary, a reunion between the Rams and their former star cornerback could be exactly what Los Angeles needs to push the defense back toward elite status.
