The St. Louis Cardinals have spent the offseason exploring trade possibilities for third baseman Nolan Arenado but have struggled to finalize a deal. His massive contract remains a major obstacle, further complicated by his no-trade clause. While Arenado has reportedly approved trades to select teams, he remains in St. Louis as Spring Training gets underway.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, trade talks between the Cardinals and Houston Astros have resumed, potentially giving Arenado another chance to consider a move. Earlier in the offseason, he reportedly rejected a deal to Houston.
“With no other deals materializing—there were discussions with Boston in case Alex Bregman left—the Cardinals and Astros recently revisited talks, hoping Arenado might be open to it now,” Heyman reported. “That may still be their best shot, but nothing seems imminent at the moment.”
For Astros fans, this development raises key questions: How much of Arenado’s contract would Houston absorb? Would he reconsider waiving his no-trade clause? Have circumstances shifted enough to change his stance? And are the Cardinals growing more desperate to move him?
Nolan Arenado Reportedly Rejects Astros Trade Again
Although a trade to Houston appears unlikely, there’s still a chance Arenado has reconsidered. Being on a team actively trying to move you can be draining, and now that Spring Training has begun, the situation may feel even more unsettling—even for a seasoned veteran like Arenado.
The Astros have already taken steps to strengthen their roster for 2025, and acquiring Arenado—potentially without giving up top prospects—would provide another boost heading into the regular season.
However, for Cardinals fans, this latest update may only feel like another round of familiar trade rumors with no obvious resolution.
