BREAKING: Washington Lands State’s No. 1, Highly Sought-After Recruit in Blockbuster Win

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies are on a recruiting tear, continuing to build serious momentum as they prepare for life in the Big Ten. On Sunday night, they secured a massive in-state commitment from four-star edge rusher, the top-ranked high school football player in Washington. The standout from Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien made it official, announcing that he would stay close to home and play for the Huskies, choosing them over national powers Ohio State and Oregon.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 267 pounds, he is a physically imposing and athletically gifted edge defender. According to 247Sports, he’s ranked as the No. 16 edge rusher in the nation and the No. 151 overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Initially scheduled to make his official visit to Washington on May 2 during the team’s spring game, he instead shifted the visit to May 30. However, he was already seen on campus over the past weekend as an unofficial visitor — accompanied by his brother, Lowen Colman-Brusa, an offensive lineman also being recruited by the Huskies.

In an interview with On3’s Steve Wiltfong, rusher Derek Colman-Brusa spoke highly of his experience during the visit, praising the program’s atmosphere and the intimate interactions with the coaching staff. “The environment was awesome,” he said. “It was a smaller group, meaning it was more intimate with the coaches. There are so many great opportunities at the school. UW has deep connections, incredible resources, and a collective of great people. They talked a lot about the direction of the program under the new staff and how they see themselves progressing in the coming years.”

Colman-Brusa’s commitment follows another major recruiting win for Washington, as they recently flipped five-star offensive lineman Kodi Greene from the Oregon Ducks. Greene, though now playing at powerhouse Mater Dei in California, is originally from Washington, giving the Huskies even more local star power. Fisch and his staff are clearly making a priority of securing top in-state talent, effectively starting to build a “recruiting fence” around the Evergreen State.

Colman-Brusa is viewed as a high-upside pass rusher who could make an early impact on Washington’s defensive front. Evaluators are raving about his potential. “His tape really stands out,” said 247Sports analyst Greg Biggins. “He’s a natural pass rusher who can line up both on the edge and inside. He’s explosive off the line, can win with speed or use a slick outside-in move. He’s got incredibly strong hands, can overpower blockers, changes direction well, and has flexibility that allows him to maneuver around offensive linemen. He’s not just a straight-line guy—he shows balance, power, and finishes plays with authority. He’s a naturally strong kid with a relentless motor.”

With Colman-Brusa’s commitment, the Huskies’ 2026 recruiting class now ranks No. 17 nationally, per 247Sports. Half of the current 10-man class hails from Washington state — a testament to the new coaching staff’s local recruiting focus and early success. As Fisch continues to reshape the program, it’s clear that he’s not only targeting national talent but also ensuring the state’s best players don’t leave home.
