Texas A&M’s spring football practices are not only a time to prepare for the upcoming 2025 season but also serve as a pivotal opportunity to showcase the program to prospective talent. In recent weekends, the Aggies have hosted top recruits from the 2026 and 2027 classes, with the momentum continuing as 18 elite prospects are set to visit College Station this weekend.
Among the notable visitors is four-star 2027 quarterback Trae Taylor, who has already attracted attention as a rising signal-caller in his class. Taylor’s visit underscores the growing anticipation surrounding the Aggies’ future at the quarterback position.
Despite concluding the 2024 season with an 8-4 record, second-year head coach Mike Elko enters 2025 with elevated expectations. The team is poised to rely on redshirt sophomore Marcel Reed as the full-time starting quarterback. Reed, who played in 11 games last season, showcased his dual-threat capabilities with 1,864 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 547 rushing yards. Coach Elko is looking for Reed to further develop, particularly in his comfort with the offense and passing game. Reed has expressed increased confidence within the system and aims to elevate his completion rate to 70% this season.
The offensive line remains robust, with the return of all five starters, providing a solid foundation for the offense. Additionally, the running back room is bolstered by the return of key players, including Rueben Owens, who is gearing up for his junior season after recovering from a lower leg injury that sidelined him last year. Owens, a top recruit from El Campo High School, has gained additional weight and strength during his rehabilitation and is optimistic about making a significant impact in the upcoming season.
For the recruits visiting this weekend, Texas A&M’s challenges in the previous season are viewed as part of the natural growth under Elko’s leadership. Similar to rival Texas, which faced struggles before achieving consecutive College Football Playoff appearances under Steve Sarkisian, the Aggies’ recent hurdles are seen as steps toward a brighter future.
