The Seattle Mariners lost a right-handed pitcher to the Miami Marlins through a waiver claim on Saturday. There was some initial confusion surrounding the transaction, as the pitcher had not been designated for assignment (DFA), leaving unclear how he ended up on waivers.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times explained that players can be placed on waivers without being DFA’d, but there had been no previous announcement indicating that this player was placed on waivers. The lack of communication regarding the waiver status led to some uncertainty about the situation. However, the pitcher’s departure marks the end of his time with the Mariners, who had been considering him for a potential spot in their bullpen. This move leaves the Mariners with a 40-man roster spot to fill, which could lead to changes as they evaluate possible roster additions.
Martinez, 30, is a four-year veteran of the Houston Astros, with whom he won a World Series in 2022. Over his career, he’s posted a 3.93 ERA with a 6-6 record. Last season, he made a career-high 44 appearances. He had been competing for one of the final bullpen spots with the Mariners but will now move on to the Marlins.
This development opens a spot on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, which they will need to fill. Rowdy Tellez is a potential candidate, as he’s been getting significant playing time this spring and can provide depth at first base or DH. Alternatively, the Mariners could use the spot for a pitcher, such as Shintaro Fujinami, who is in camp on a minor league deal.
