The Red Sox spent the entire offseason searching for a right-handed bat, and among the available options, The move became official late Wednesday night when chief baseball officer Craig Breslow reached a three-year, $120 million agreement with the two-time World Series champion third baseman. The contract, which was announced on Saturday, includes opt-outs after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, along with some deferrals, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
Bregman, who had offers from the Tigers for six years and $171.5 million (with an opt-out after 2026) and from the Cubs for four years and $120 million (with opt-outs after 2026 and 2027), chose the higher average annual value from Boston. Not only does Bregman provide the Red Sox with a right-handed power bat to balance a left-handed heavy lineup, but he also strengthens an infield defense that led the Majors in errors last season—an area that has been a weak point for the team over the last few years. Here’s a look at what Boston’s Opening Day lineup might look like:
- Jarren Duran, LF
- Rafael Devers, 3B
- Alex Bregman, 2B
- Triston Casas, 1B
- Trevor Story, SS
- Masataka Yoshida, DH
- Connor Wong, C
- Wilyer Abreu, RF
- Ceddanne Rafaela, CF
Although Bregman has been a standout third baseman for much of his career, he’s most likely to play second base for the Red Sox, as that position has lacked stability since Dustin Pedroia’s career was cut short by injuries after the 2017 season. Rafael Devers has been Boston’s third baseman since his MLB debut in 2017. Pairing Bregman with a now-healthy Trevor Story at shortstop should give the Red Sox one of the top middle infields in the Majors.
