The Dallas Cowboys have taken significant steps to strengthen their running back group, an area they prioritized this offseason. Some analysts even argue that selecting a running back in the first round could be a wise decision, considering last year’s performance.
With Dak Prescott expected to make a full recovery, the Cowboys’ ground game is positioned better than it was last season. At the very least, Prescott’s passing ability should create more opportunities for the run game.
However, concerns remain about whether the current backfield is strong enough. That’s why Aaliyan Mohammed of Sporting News suggested a potential trade for Christian McCaffrey from the San Francisco 49ers. His proposed deal involves sending the No. 76 pick and a 2026 third-round selection to San Francisco.
“The Cowboys need a major overhaul in their backfield after finishing among the league’s worst rushing attacks last season,” Mohammed wrote. “They could make a blockbuster move to land a superstar running back.
“Dallas added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders this offseason, but both struggled last year and may not be reliable as primary options. The Cowboys ranked sixth-worst in rushing yards and managed just three runs over 20 yards. While drafting a running back is an option, acquiring McCaffrey would bring in one of the league’s best.”

Is McCaffrey healthy?
Bringing in McCaffrey would undoubtedly elevate the Cowboys’ offense, but durability concerns remain. Injuries have been a recurring issue throughout his career.
He appeared in just four games during the 2024 season, though 49ers general manager John Lynch remains optimistic.
“Christian’s doing really well,” Lynch said. “Last season was frustrating for him, but he’s doing everything possible to prepare for this year. We’re hopeful he’ll have a great season. When healthy, he’s one of the best.”
Lynch added, “We’re following the medical staff’s guidance, but Christian has been relentless in his rehab. He’s the type of player you have to slow down because he works so hard. As my friend, [Steelers HC] Mike Tomlin, likes to say, ‘It’s better to say ‘Woah’ than ‘Sic ‘em.’ Christian is definitely a ‘Woah’ guy.”
Is Trading for McCaffrey Worth It?
Giving up two draft picks for McCaffrey is a risk, but it could significantly upgrade the Cowboys’ offense. While injuries remain a concern, having a player of McCaffrey’s caliber would make Dallas a more formidable team.
Right now, the Cowboys are in a position to take calculated risks. If McCaffrey becomes available, why not make the move?
