The Dallas Cowboys have made another move to retain their in-house talent, reaching a one-year contract extension with defensive back. The 25-year-old has spent the last four seasons with Dallas after being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of South Carolina, and he is now set to return for his fifth year with the franchise.
His journey in the NFL has been an interesting one. Though he was predominantly a cornerback in college, the Cowboys transitioned him to safety upon his arrival in Dallas to add depth to the position. However, his versatility has allowed him to fill multiple roles in the secondary, giving him added value as the team adjusts its defensive strategy.
Over the past few seasons, the Cowboys’ safety group has undergone significant changes, with Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker securing long-term contracts and the emergence of Markquese Bell and Juanyeh Thomas as key rotational players. As a result, Mukuamu found himself shifting back toward his natural cornerback position in 2024. Despite not being a full-time starter, he stepped up when called upon, delivering his best statistical season to date.
In 2024, Israel Mukuamu set career highs in several categories, including tackles (19) and interceptions (2) while playing in all 17 regular season games. His ability to adapt and provide quality snaps in the defensive backfield has earned him trust from the coaching staff. Additionally, his impact on special teams has been invaluable, logging 341 snaps last season in a unit that has been one of the Cowboys’ strongest assets.
Dallas has made it a priority this offseason to retain key special teams contributors, with players such as C.J. Goodwin, Trent Sieg, Bryan Anger, KaVontae Turpin, and Markquese Bell also returning under the guidance of new special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen. Sorensen, who replaced John “Bones” Fassel in January, will be tasked with continuing the unit’s strong performance, and Mukuamu’s presence will be crucial to that effort.
Beyond special teams, Mukuamu’s role in the defensive backfield could expand even further in 2025, given the current lack of depth at cornerback. While Dallas recently acquired former Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam via trade, they may still seek additional reinforcements through free agency or the draft. However, Mukuamu’s ability to play both safety and cornerback gives the Cowboys a flexible option who can step in when needed.
As the team looks to bolster its secondary, Mukuamu’s athleticism, experience, and adaptability make him a valuable chess piece in Dallas’ defensive plans. Whether filling in at cornerback, safety, or making key plays on special teams, Mukuamu has proven to be a reliable presence, and his return ensures continuity in one of the most competitive areas of the roster.
