On Friday, the Angels re-signed J.D. Davis, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post on X. After restructuring his contract, Davis will return to the Angels, initially reporting to Triple-A Salt Lake, as noted by Sam Blum of The Athletic.
Davis had originally signed a Minor League contract with the Angels in the offseason. The 32-year-old first baseman began the year with the team’s Triple-A affiliate, but was called up to the majors when Yoan Moncada was placed on the IL early in the 2025 season.
Moncada’s thumb injury gave Davis a chance for regular playing time with his new team, following a tough 2024 season. That year, Davis posted a .218/.293/.338 slash line with an 83 OPS+ and -0.4 bWAR in 46 games split between the Athletics and Yankees.
Davis, however, struggled at the plate early in 2025, going 1-9 in five games with the Angels before being designated for assignment. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors, but opted to become a free agent. This allowed the Angels to re-sign him on a new deal, and Davis will aim to regain his form in Triple-A.
As for Trout, he will miss at least 10 games due to his knee injury. The Angels don’t believe the injury is serious, but given Trout’s medical history, they plan to allow him as much rest as needed for a full recovery.
To help preserve Trout’s health, the Angels moved him from center field to right field this season, reducing the physical strain of a more demanding defensive position. Trout had been healthy up until his injury, playing in every game so far in 2025. In 29 games, he had nine home runs, 18 RBIs, and 14 runs scored, but his batting line stood at a disappointing .179/.264/.462 with an OPS+ of 102.
