The Washington Commanders have been urged to explore a trade for a $25 million Super Bowl-winning defensive end as they look to reinforce their defensive front. This recommendation aligns with the team’s ongoing efforts to enhance its pass rush and strengthen its overall defensive presence.
Commanders Secure Pro Bowl Cornerback in Bold Trade
Meanwhile, Washington recently made a major defensive acquisition by trading for four-time Pro Bowl cornerback from the New Orleans Saints. In exchange, the Commanders sent third-, fourth-, and sixth-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to New Orleans while receiving Lattimore and a fifth-round pick in return. At 28 years old, Lattimore is expected to make an immediate impact, forming a starting trio with Benjamin St-Juste and rookie Mike Sainristil in the secondary.
Financial Aspects of Lattimore’s Deal
Marshon Lattimore’s contract extends through 2026, with base salaries of $18 million in 2025 and $18.5 million in 2026. However, neither year carries guaranteed money, giving Washington financial flexibility if they need to adjust their roster in the coming seasons. Additionally, due to a contract restructure by the Saints, the Commanders are only responsible for $605,000 for the remainder of the current season, significantly reducing their immediate cap hit.
Injury Concerns and Potential Risks
Despite his impressive résumé, Lattimore’s durability has raised concerns. Over the past three seasons, injuries have limited his availability, including:
✅ Lacerated kidney (2022)
✅ Ankle sprain (2023)
✅ Hamstring injury (2024)

In total, he has appeared in just 24 of the Saints’ last 43 games. While he remains an elite talent when healthy, some analysts question whether he can maintain his top-tier performance given his recent injury history.
Commanders’ Playoff Push and Future Moves
The decision to acquire Lattimore underscores Washington’s aggressive approach in building a championship-contending defense. Currently sitting at 7-2 and leading the NFC East, the Commanders are looking to solidify their roster for a deep playoff run.
General Manager Adam Peters emphasized that Washington remains proactive in improving its roster, regardless of their current success. While the team has been advised to pursue a top-tier pass rusher, their acquisition of Lattimore signals their commitment to defensive dominance. Moving forward, balancing financial commitments, injury risks, and on-field performance will be key to sustaining their success.
