Orioles Acquire a right hand pitcher from seattle in Late-Night Deal as Mariners Make Roster Moves
In a late-night transaction on Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners traded right-handed pitcher to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
The deal comes shortly after Seattle designated Castillo for assignment on Tuesday, signaling a shift in the team’s roster strategy.
Luis F. Castillo originally joined the Mariners organization on a minor league contract in January. He was called up from Triple-A Tacoma in early April to temporarily fill the No. 5 spot in Seattle’s starting rotation. His call-up came after Emerson Hancock was optioned to the minors following a tough season debut. Hancock had been starting in place of All-Star George Kirby, who began the season on the injured list with shoulder inflammation.
During his short stint with the Mariners, he pitched seven innings over two starts, allowing six earned runs and seven hits, while striking out five and walking seven. He was then optioned back to Tacoma on April 10, and Hancock reclaimed his spot in the rotation the following week.
It’s important to note that this Luis F. Castillo is not to be confused with the more well-known three-time All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo.

In Tacoma, Castillo made four more starts, compiling a 5.02 ERA over 14 1/3 innings before being moved to Baltimore.
Meanwhile, the Mariners have also made another roster move, re-signing veteran pitcher Casey Lawrence to a minor league deal. Lawrence, who has been designated for assignment four times in 2025, returns to the organization as a depth option.
Despite the roster shuffling, the Mariners remain one of the hottest teams in baseball. Sitting at 22-14, they currently hold first place in the American League West and boast the second-best record in the AL, just behind the Detroit Tigers. Seattle has impressively won nine straight series, their longest streak since the club’s legendary 116-win season in 2001, which featured 15 consecutive series victories.
The Mariners have a day off on Thursday before returning to action Friday to open a six-game homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays.
