The Seattle Seahawks turned heads at the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting former Alabama quarterback in the third round, only months after signing veteran quarterback Sam Darnold in free agency. Although he is considered a long-term project, the Seahawks are already preparing ways to integrate the rookie into their offense this season.
Head coach Mike Macdonald emphasized that Darnold will command the majority of the offensive workload, projecting him to take more than 90% of the snaps in 2025. Still, both Macdonald and general manager John Schneider made it clear he will have a role, likely through specially crafted plays and packages designed to maximize his athleticism and create challenges for opposing defenses.
“There’s always urgency in developing our guys,” Macdonald said on April 26. “Jalen will be right in that mix. Sam’s going to take the overwhelming majority of the reps, but if Jalen earns a role and it helps the team move the ball, we’ll absolutely use him. We’re excited about the problems he can cause for defensive coordinators.”
Jalen Milroe Was the Clear Choice at No. 92
Schneider added that when Seattle was on the clock with the 92nd pick, Milroe stood alone atop their draft board. He praised Milroe’s speed—reportedly clocked at 21.2 mph via GPS—work ethic, and leadership qualities. Schneider also highlighted Milroe’s academic achievements and his ability to adapt through four different offensive coordinators during college.
“He’s a phenomenal athlete,” Schneider said. “His background, his family, the way he carried himself during the visit—it all stood out. When it came time to pick, he was the only guy left in that tier for us.”
Darnold’s Contract Leaves Room for Transition in 2026
Though Darnold enters the season as QB1, his position may not be long-term. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the structure of Darnold’s three-year, $100 million deal gives Seattle the option to move on after just one year. The Seahawks can opt out of the contract after paying $37.5 million for 2025, providing flexibility if Milroe shows enough promise to take over.
While Darnold is clearly the short-term starter, the Seahawks appear to be laying the groundwork for Milroe’s eventual transition—possibly as soon as 2026.
