The San Diego Padres are allegedly looking into trade proposals for a new Star Pitcher, but a deal before the season begins appears improbable. If they fall out of contention, they may consider moving him closer to the trade deadline. While the Padres have a talented squad, the National League boasts numerous good clubs that could overtake them in the standings by midseason. This star is none other than Dylan Cease.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, San Diego might make a blockbuster trade for Cease with the Atlanta Braves.
“It’s plenty plausible for five months from now, though, if the quintet of Arizona, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia is as good as it should be. Putting San Diego in a position where getting something in exchange for the guys who are expected to go in November is preferable to simply going down with the ship,” Miller wrote.
A.J. Preller, GM of San Diego, and Alex Anthopoulos, GM of Atlanta, have only made one trade since Anthopoulos took over in 2017, but a move for Cease would benefit both parties. The Padres could acquire one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects, as well as additional assets to improve their farm system.
Financially, San Diego may struggle to keep Cease after this season. Spotrac predicts he will sign for $108 million in free agency, but his final price could be significantly higher.
For Atlanta, getting Cease—and the eventual return of Spencer Strider from the IL—would give them one of the most dominant starting rotations in baseball, potentially positioning them for another World Series run.
