While winning a title every single season is unrealistic, there are a handful of programs in college football whose fans and boosters feel as if that team should be contending for one each year.
With the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams, there is more access than ever and more room for error for some top programs. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from going after certain coaches who they feel aren’t leading their favorite program in the right direction.
One coach who was under fire on Saturday was Ohio State’s Ryan Day. The No. 4 Buckeyes (5-1) came into its Week 9 game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-2) as 25.5-point favorites and coming off a bye week following a devastating loss to Oregon. While the Buckeyes ended up winning by a score of 21-17, they did so, needing a late fourth-quarter touchdown to take that lead.
While a playoff berth is still a possibility for the Buckeyes, fans are growing tired of Day’s inability to perform at the highest level possible despite having virtually unlimited resources.
“I’ve got to hand it to Ryan Day, he’s really really good at making the same utterly joyless football team every year, no matter who is on his staff or roster,” wrote one user.
“This performance off a loss and a bye week makes me sick to my stomach. Ryan Day is embarrassing this football program,” wrote one Ohio State fan.
“It’s getting pretty hard to defend Ryan Day,” added another.
“Chip Kelly knows Ryan Day isn’t the guy and that’s why he’s here, it’s just a matter of time,” speculated one fan.
“i’ll never forgive ryan day for what he’s done to this program,” commented another user.
While a win usually impresses fans, Ohio State’s offense simply wasn’t good enough with an extra week to prepare. The Buckeyes were 1-of-10 on third downs, were outrushed 121 to 64 yards and had just 23 yards of total offense in a scoreless third quarter.
It is worth noting that Nebraska came into the game with the No. 18 defense in the country, but that won’t ease the minds of Ohio State fans who had been bragging about the team’s roster, which reportedly featured $20 million worth of NIL spending.
The Buckeyes will need to go back to the drawing board, as the team is set to travel to Beaver Stadium next week to take on the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions.
