Jordan Wright is ‘catch of the day’ as Grimsby’s Town’s new goalkeeper

Grimsby Town have confirmed their second summer signing, goalkeeper Jordan Wright, who joins from Lincoln City for an unknown amount.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has signed a two-year contract with Blundell Park, where he hopes to take the starting slot after spending two years as a backup at the Imps after signing from Nottingham Forest.

Wright had many non-league loans to gain experience while progressing through the Forest youth before joining permanently for Lincoln in 2022. He went on to make 31 appearances for the Mariners’ local rivals, keeping 10 clean sheets.

It was a key priority for Town to recruit a new goalkeeper this summer, and head coach David Artell believes the team has strengthened in this area with the addition of Wright.

Artell told the club’s website, “He’s an excellent shot-stopper with a commanding presence.” He has good level experience, and now he needs to play frequently for an extended period of time, therefore he faces a new difficulty.

“Obviously, he has Jake [Eastwood] to compete with, and we’re excited to work with him.” He’s a good goalkeeper, and I believe he’ll be a great addition to our team.”

Wright’s short-distance move provides him with an excellent opportunity to take on a regular starting role, which he has yet to do as a professional. Eastwood is still under contract with the club for next season and will compete for the gloves going forward.

Grimsby’s goalkeeping coach, Steve Croudson, previously worked with Wright at Lincoln and had a voice in the move, with direct contacts between the two taking place prior to the completion of the trade.

Town’s new signing added, “I’m delighted to get it done now and get the season started.” I knew Steve [Croudson] from earlier; we had a couple discussions, and then things proceeded forward. I can’t wait to start going, and let’s hope for a successful season!”

With the transfer window now officially open, the Mariners’ transfer activity is anticipated to heat up in the following few weeks before pre-season begins at the end of June, and Wright will be in from day one of testing to try to claim the number.
