Yanks break through in ninth, edge past Tigers

NEW YORK The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Friday night thanks to game-winning singles from Anthony Rizzo and a tying double from Giancarlo Stanton in the ninth inning.

After being shut out on two hits for eight innings, the Yankees quickly started and finished the ninth inning by getting four consecutive hits off of reliever Jason Foley (2-1).

After Alex Verdugo bunted a single toward third base, Aaron Judge advanced to second base after bouncing a single down the middle to start the inning. After striking out his previous three times up, Stanton then used a 97 mph sinker to line an opposite-field double into the right-field corner, putting runners at second and third.

This season, Stanton had not hit a fastball that clocked 97 mph or more.

After then, Rizzo grounded a single past second baseman Andy Ibanez’s glove through a drawn-in infield.

Born and raised on neighboring Long Island, Foley has made saves on 14 straight opportunities since June 18 of last year.

Dennis Santana (2-0) earned the victory with a hitless inning pitched.

Guardians 0 and Angels 6. Los Angeles defeated Cleveland with the help of a three-run home run from Mickey Moniak and six scoreless innings pitched by Jose Soriano, who recorded his first career victory as a starter. Soriano (1-4), who only made relief appearances the previous season, gave up just five hits. Only once was the right-hander under pressure, as he escaped a jam in the fifth inning by striking out Andres Gimenez with the bases loaded.

MARINERS 3, ASTROS 5, After the Astros defeated Seattle with a four-run seventh inning, Jose Altuve scored the game-winning bunt RBI single and stole his 300th career base. Along with Derek Jeter, Paul Molitor, Willie Mays, and Roberto Alomar, the 2017 AL MVP is the fifth player in MLB history to have at least 300 thefts, 2,000 hits, 400 doubles, 200 home runs, and a lifetime batting average of.300 or better.

ANGERS 1, ROYALS 7, Brady Singer threw six shutout innings, Salvador Perez hit a three-run home run, and Kansas City defeated Texas. A pitcher’s duel was broken up by Perez’s ninth home run of the year in Kansas City’s six-run seventh inning. Before Perez gave the Royals a 7-1 lead, Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, and Kyle Isbel all had RBI singles.

RED SOX 2, TWINS 5, With six shutout innings, Chris Paddack helped Minnesota defeat Boston and win for the eleventh time in a row. The Twins’ winning runs from 2003 and 2006 were matched, making them the third longest in team history. The previous record was set by the team in 1991 when it won its final World Series. In 1980, it also won 12 straight.

GLOBAL LEAGUE

DIAMONDBACKS 1, PADRES 7, After consecutive home runs by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jake Cronenworth, and a strong 6 2/3 inning from Dylan Cease, San Diego defeated Arizona to win three straight games. It was a two-run home run by Manny Machado. Cronenworth added two doubles to his final three extra-base hits.

GIANTS 3, PHILLIES 4, With an RBI single and two runs from Brandon Marsh, Alec Bohm extended his hitting streak to 16 games as Philadelphia overcame San Francisco. Philadelphia, which has won 14 of 17 games and leads the majors with 22 victories, got two hits from Trea Turner.

MARLINS 1, ATHLETICS 3, With a two-run home run by Brent Rooker in the fourth inning, Oakland defeated Miami for the fifth time in a row. The A’s supported lefty JP Sears (2-2), who triumphed for the first time in four starts, and Esteury Ruiz added an RBI single in the fifth.

WHITE SOX 0, CARDINALS 3. St. Louis defeated Chicago with three runs scored by Nolan Arenado, three hits allowed by Sonny Gray in seven innings. In his longest start of the season, Gray (4-1) struck out five while walking none as the Cardinals ended a two-game losing run. Of the remaining 14 hitters he faced, Gray retired the final 8 and 13 of them. It was the White Sox’s fourth consecutive loss.

BLUE JAYS 3, NATIONALS 9, Luis Garcia Jr.’s first pinch-hit home run of the season, a three-run blast far to center field in the seventh inning, helped Washington overcome Toronto. Garcia hit his second home run of the year, a 4-3 advantage, off of Erik Swanson’s 85 mph splitter.


REDS 0; ORIOLES 3. Baltimore defeated Cincinnati, and Cole Irvin continued his scoreless streak to 20 2/3 innings. After 6 1/3 innings, Irvin (3-1) gave up two hits, both of which were from Elly De La Cruz. He walked none and struck out four.

METS 8 and RAYS 10 Amed Rosario got three hits and two RBI in his season debut, while Johnny DeLuca had three RBI in his first game back from a broken right hand.
