Just In: Vols defensive starter announces he’s staying ‘back home’ at Tennessee

Boo Carter was one of the in-state stars of Tennessee’s 2024 signing class, and he quickly made a name for himself during his first year with the Vols, making a handful of starts during the regular season. While some of his teammates have entered the NCAA transfer portal, Carter indicated Friday that he won’t be following their lead

Tennessee’s freshman defensive back announced Friday evening in a post on his X account that he’s planning to stay with the Vols. A former Top247 prospect from Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tenn., Carter started Tennessee’s final five regular-season games at the Star position and also made an impact as a punt returner on the way to earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Carter revealed his intentions by posting a simple message — “Back home!” — along with a house emoji. The message accompanied a Volunteer Club graphic featuring a picture of Carter in an orange Tennessee uniform that reads, “HOME SWEET HOME. TO ME.”

Carter appeared in all 13 of the Vols’ games and finished the season with 38 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack, along with one interception. He also was credited with three quarterback hurries. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 14 after recording a career-high seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack, and being credited with a hurry during Tennessee’s 24-17 win over rival Florida.

He also averaged 16.5 yards on 12 punt returns, including a long return of 38 yards. He had four returns of more than 25 yards this season.

Last month, ahead of the Vols’ regular-season finale at Vanderbilt, Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez spoke highly of Carter in describing his development since the start of preseason camp in August.
