The lack of cover or options in the No.10 position has become increasingly evident this season, with Joel Piroe shining one week and struggling the next. Leeds could strengthen in this area in January.
Piroe has a lot of goals, but his creativity is often lacking, and he comes and goes from games far too easily. Cree Summerville and Georgie Rutter are frequently the ones who supply him, not the other way around.
Leeds is aware that they require a ten. That was demonstrated by the summer’s pursuit of playmakers such as Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley, both of whom were turned down. We require a player in the mold of Samu Saiz.
Leeds are unlikely to re-sign the 32-year-old Spaniard, who is currently playing for Sivasspor in Turkey. However, having a player with that tenacity, flair, creativity, and aggression is exactly what we require.
He scored in a 3-1 loss to Basaksehir on Tuesday night (above). When his fellow Spaniard was starring for Leeds, he almost gave the club another Pablo Hernandez. He departed in 2019.
Leeds require a Saiz-type player in January to compete with Piroe. It’s unlikely that we’ll sign a player capable of doing that in the next month. Kerem Akturkoglu was mentioned.
