The Oklahoma Sooners landed a big fish in the form of transfer John Mateer, the top-rated signal caller in the portal this offseason. The former Washington State passer opted to leave after wrapping up his 2024 campaign.
Mateer threw for 3,139 yards last season while leading the Cougars to an 8-4 season. He should become the immediate frontrunner for the QB1 spot in Norman following the exit of former Sooners starter Jackson Arnold.
Baker Mayfield apparently played a role in that transfer decision. The NFL star reached out to Mateer while he was on a visit to the Oklahoma campus. Initially, he ignored Mayfield’s attempts to contact him!
“It was surreal,” he recalled of Mayfield’s correspondence. “I actually didn’t answer his first phone call. It was a number I didn’t know, and I really don’t answer numbers I don’t know.”
John Mateer has been on college football programs’ radar for some time now. It was reported that he’d received a seven-figure offer from a tampering suitor while still competing on the field this past season. After making his transfer decision public in the offseason, that interest grew
Mateer now takes the step up from Washington State, who also lost its head coach and offensive coordinator, to the SEC. The Sooners hope the upgrade at QB results in an uptick in wins.
