LOUISVILLE, KY: The Louisville baseball team completed what they began when they played Youngstown State over the weekend, winning the series finale 10-2 on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals (7-4) not only defeat the Penguins (0-9) in three games, but they also increase their current winning run to seven games. During their winning streak, Louisville has scored ten or more runs in all but one of their games, averaging 14.9 runs per contest.

Louisville scored three runs in the second inning to get their scoring attempts underway. After an RBI double by Ryan McCoy (1-3, RBI, 2B, BB), an RBI single by Michael Lippe (1-4, RBI), and a wild pitch that drove Isaac Humphrey (0-2, 2 BB) home. In the series finale, Patrick Forbes (4.0 IP, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 H) was put in to start on the mound and put on the finest performance of his early career. He only gave up a sacrifice fly in the third inning, allowing just four hitters to reach base, and set career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. Luke Napleton of the Cardinals scored the game’s first run shortly after the Penguins did.

Those weren’t the only insurance runs Louisville would create, as the Cardinals took advantage of shaky defense from Youngstown State. Lucas Moore (0-0) scored on a fielding error and Kilen got home on a wild pitch in the seventh, then a fielders choice from Logan Beard (0-1, RBI) plus a throwing error brought home their final run.

Louisville’s bullpen was working hard to hold it down while their bats were busy providing insurance. In his first appearance as a reliever, Parker Detmers (1.2 IP, 3 K, 1 H) also held YSU at bay. Will Koger (1.0 IP, 1 K, 2 H, 1 ER) gave up just one run on a wild pitch, and Kayden Campbell (1.0 IP, 1 K) twirled a scoreless ninth. Ty Starke (1.1 IP, 2 K, 3 H) continued his scoreless streak to start his collegiate career.

Louisville’s next home game will be a midweek showdown against Morehead State as they continue their 18-game home stretch. The first pitch will be broadcast on 970 WGTK and shown on ACC Network Extra on Tuesday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m. EST.
