Amazon Prime revealed on Friday that it will broadcast 21 New York Yankees games in 2024, and fans quickly began cheering.
Amazon’s bundle includes 19 of the 21 Yankees games on Wednesday evenings, which are free for Amazon Prime customers. They will be shown on Amazon in the team’s home territory (New York State, Connecticut, north and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania).
Michael Kay, the Yankees’ longtime play-by-play announcer, and the rest of the YES Network team will handle the broadcasts.
The announcement should not have surprised Yankees supporters, who have been complaining for years about the team’s move to streaming platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, and Peacock. It’s uncertain if Peacock will return in 2024, but Apple TV is back.
Yankees games will be broadcast on at least eight networks or platforms in 2024. According to CableTV.com, in addition to Amazon and Apple TV+, ESPN, Fox, FS1, MLB Network, TBS, and YES Network will show Yankees games.
This will make it more difficult for fans to find Yankees games, but it is the future of sports broadcasting, not only in baseball. Last season, the NFL had its first streaming-only playoff game, and some pundits foresee a streaming-only Super Bowl in the near future.
However, as previously mentioned, Yankees supporters have been particularly vociferous in their opposition to the streaming trend. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo said in 2022 that if he tried to watch a game on Amazon and had problems, he would literally howl at the moon. It’s no wonder that Yankees supporters were frustrated by Friday’s announcement.

The New York Mets could surprise a few folks. New York did not make a significant investment this offseason, but this does not preclude the club from doing so next year. The Mets still have the most money of any team, and one of baseball’s finest players will be available. Juan Soto, the New York Yankees’ superstar slugger, is one of baseball’s best players, and while the team would like to keep him, he will be eligible for free agency. The 2024 season hasn’t even begun, so it’s certainly too early to consider next year, but Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer attempted to guess where Soto will land and named the Mets as his top choice.
“If the Mets indeed decide they want to sign Soto next winter, it’ll be hard for anyone to outlast them in a bidding war,” he said. “Even for a year that looks like a bridge after they went all-in on 2023 with a $350 million payroll, the Mets are still projected to run a $315 million payroll.”And, with so many one-year contracts on the books, their commitments will be essentially slashed in half when the season ends. The Mets should not have to pick between signing Soto and keeping Pete Alonso. If they want both, they must be able to afford both.”
Landing Soto would be a huge boost for the Mets. New York could need some help in the outfield, and Soto’s addition would immediately improve the lineup. Don’t be shocked if conjecture about a prospective alliance between the Mets and Soto continues throughout the season.
