Former Yankees Target Has New Suitor

Blake Snell, the current NL Cy Young winner, has received one offer from the New York Yankees. According to reports, that is still Snell’s only available offer. However, at least one American League team is in communication with Snell and his reps, as the New York Post revealed on Thursday. The Los Angeles Angels have reportedly kept in contact with Snell, but the team’s owner, Arte Moreno, has not authorized the organization to submit an offer, according to The Post.

It makes sense to bring in a pitcher of Snell’s caliber to lead the Angels’ rotation in 2024 after they lost Shohei Ohtani to the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency. The Yankees’ rumored offer, which surfaced earlier in the offseason, was said to be for $150 million over six years. Subsequently, the Post revealed that the Yankees were considering paying Snell more than they are now paying Carlos Rodón ($27 million annually). However, an agreement was never reached. The Yankees are thought to have withdrawn their offer.

Marcus Stroman inked a contract with the Yankees.

However, Snell is still available, much like third baseman Matt Chapman and outfielder Cody Bellinger. Jordan Montgomery, a former pitcher for the Yankees, agrees. There’s always a chance the Yankees will come back for an unsigned talent like Snell, particularly if he’s available at a modest discount. The fact that Snell is still unsigned is odd. Having won a Cy Young in each league since 2023, he is now in the elite group of pitchers to have done so in each league.

Snell finished with an MLB-best 2.25 ERA and went 14-9, garnering almost all of the first-place votes. He has now led the Majors in ERA twice. With the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018, he finished 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA. That season, he was the AL Cy Young winner.

Snell is one of 21 pitchers with at least two Cy Young awards and one of just seven pitchers to win a Cy Young in both leagues.
