So Sad: With 6 departures, Brent Venables explains Oklahoma’s considerable turnover at wide receiver

NORMAN — During his weekly radio show on Oct. 21, between Oklahoma’s games against South Carolina and Ole Miss—and right after the firing of offensive coordinator Seth Littrell—Brent Venables expressed optimism about the future of the Sooners’ wide receiver room

The Oklahoma center has been in possession of the Bedlam trophy since Oklahoma’s overtime win in Stillwater back on Feb. 24. The trophy—an outline of the state of Oklahoma—has been the centerpiece of Godwin’s living room, on full display on a fireplace TV stand in his apartment

Why did Godwin have the trophy? He assumed last year’s 84-82 thriller in Stillwater—which was decided on an overtime buzzer-beater by then-OU guard Javian McCollum—was the final meeting between the two in-state rivals, given the Sooners’ subsequent move to the SEC in July, leaving the Cowboys and the Big 12 behind.

The wind,” Venables said Friday, with a laugh. “Who knows what all goes into a lot of those things. There’s some guys, hey, maybe some of the conversation is you need a fresh start, too. Again, at the end of the day, whoever’s here, my job is to make sure who’s here, they have an appreciation, a thankfulness, a respect for their opportunity. I want guys that show up every day, that are driven, are ambitious, they’re going to fight for their opportunity, they’re going to fight for their teammates. The group of guys that chose not to be here, hey, they did a great job while they were here, and we certainly wish them well.
