Cooper’s salary will be far lower than what he earned in 2023 at Nebraska.
On December 7, Florida State formally announced the appointment of Evan Cooper as their new safety coach. Cooper, who missed the 2024 season, is joining the Seminoles. He has NFL experience and was Nebraska’s secondary coach and coordinator of the defensive passing game in 2023.
The university provided Cooper’s Letter of Understanding on Thursday in response to a records request made by NoleGameday. On December 5, Cooper and Michael Alford, the vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics, signed the contract.
His official hire date, which was not included in the Letter of Understanding, marked the start of the first year of the agreement, which ends on February 28, 2026. March 1, 2026, will mark the start of the second and last year, which will conclude on February 28, 2027.
Cooper’s salary will be far lower than it was at Nebraska, maybe as a result of his hiring as a safety coach just rather than a secondary coach and coordinator of defensive passing games. He was supposed to earn $670,000 in 2024 before leaving the program, and he apparently earned that much in 2023.
According to the terms of his contract with FSU, Cooper will be paid $300K during the first year of his deal and $400K during the second year.
That means Cooper will make roughly $300K in 2025-26 and $400K in 2026-27.
Florida State paid defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr., who will return to the staff for a third year, $700K in 2024. Surtain Sr. will make $750K in 2025.
Cooper will receive $300K in the first year of his contract with FSU and $400K in the second, per the rules of that agreement.
Cooper will therefore earn about $300K in 2025–2026 and $400K in 2026–2027.
In 2024, Florida State gave $700K to defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr., who would rejoin the team for a third season. In 2025, Surtain Sr. will earn $750K.
