The New York Knicks emerged from a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers with far more concerns than a wasted opportunity to win a game. Late in the loss, their franchise player suffered a twisted ankle, leaving New York scrambling for answers.

He has avoided a severe diagnosis, but the news provided is alarming nonetheless, as the Knicks will be without their superstar for multiple weeks.

He was in uncommon form against the Lakers, scoring 39 points and adding 10 assists in 41 minutes. Unfortunately, his night ended abruptly, allowing Los Angeles to win 113-109 in overtime.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, he is expected to miss at least two weeks due to a damaged right ankle.

“New York Knicks star point guard Jalen Brunson is expected to miss at least two weeks after spraining his right ankle late in Thursday night’s overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.”

To make matters worse, the Knicks suffered a 105-95 loss to the LA Clippers during their first game without Brunson.

Brunson was in rare form against the Lakers, posting 39 points and 10 assists in 41 minutes. Unfortunately, his night ended in a sudden manner, thus opening the door for Los Angeles to prevail with a 113-109 overtime win.

Brunson, 28, is in the midst of another All-NBA season for the Knicks. He has appeared in 61 of the team’s 63 games, averaging 26.3 points, 7.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 steal, and 2.3 three-point field goal attempts on.490/.384/.825 shooting.

Brunson is presently seventh in the NBA in scoring and eighth in assists per game, which only touches the surface of how important he has been to the Knicks.

Brunson has been the definition of clutch throughout the 2024-25 regular season. When New York needs a bucket, the ball just goes his way, and the team knows he’ll finish the job and provide a win in a close game.

With Brunson out, the Knicks will need to modify their strategy for closing out games.

The silver lining is that Brunson averted a more serious diagnosis, which may have kept him out for longer. If he is able to return in two weeks, he will still have enough time to get back into playing shape and maybe return to All-NBA status before the playoffs begin.

Meanwhile, the Knicks will face a slew of concerns about how they intend to deal with Brunson’s unexpected absence.
